It’s my first time in Azerbaijan. To get a proper first impression of Baku, I took the Metro to İçәrişәhәr (Icherisheher)—the capital’s old city. As I deliberately got lost in its labyrinth, this ancient walled city enchanted me.
Firstly, it was still living with the locals. They didn’t mind visitors roaming around. Tourist businesses weren’t too aggressive. When I said no, they didn’t bother me anymore. Most of all, it was well-maintained. I hardly saw any litter. New buildings were uniform with the whole complex. I was impressed alright.
This community reminds me of other living UNESCO World Heritage sites I’ve been to: the Historic Center of Mexico City and Luang Prabang. This is the third post on the list in the row. Do you see the pattern?
